The Mexican Society for the Obesity Surgery, was born as consequence of a high degree of interest amongst a group of Mexican Surgeons, who for years have been performing Bariatric Surgery and have communicated their experiences in cientific reunions in a personal basis. At the XVI National Congress of the Mexican Association of General Surgeons C.A. , which took place in Acapulco, Guerrero in 1992, a group of surgeons led by Rafael Alvarez Cordero MD, agreed to creat the foundation for the Mexican Society for the Obesity Surgery, having as honor witnesses the following doctors and mentors: Tijerina de la Garza , Jorge Bautista O´Farril and Gustavo Ramirez Wiella (of Mexico), Alberto Salinas (of Venezuela), and Rafael Capella (of Colombia), together whit 122 congress participants they became the honor witnesses and signatories to the book of documents for the Society Foundation.

In September 8, 1993, the doctors Rafael Alvarez Cordero, Ezequiel Enrique Aragon Viruette, Luis Padilla Sanchez, Fernando Ceron Rodriguez, Jorge Ramon Ceseña Pruneda, Rodolfo Enrique Garcia Castañeda y Antonio Toledo Delgado, met with attorney Carlos Prieto Aceves, public notary no. 40 of the Mexico City D.F. and formally enacted the Mexican Society for the Obesity Surgery Civil Association. As of this date dozens of Surgeons from all over the country. Experts in general surgery as well as gastrointestinal surgery, wishing to help patients with obesity related problems with the most modern and effective surgical techniques, have joined the Society which members have reached over a 100 members.

With the principal objective of the Society to unify the criteria for the diagnosis, medical and nutritional treatment , surgical management and follow up for obesity patients . It was agreed to follow the work shops for surgeons, that Doctors Rafael Alvarez Cordero, Fernando Ceron Rodriguez and other colleagues were following since the 80´s. As part of the corporation basic activities, courses and work shops became the most important activities of the Society´s Annual Congress.

The Mexican Society for the Obesity Surgery founded in 1995, together with societies from the United States of America , Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and Italy, the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO). The Society has participated in World Congresses , like the one that took place in Cancun, Mexico in 1997, by the direction of Juan Ramon de la Fuente MD (National health Director), the basic document about Obesity Surgery was enacted and included in the Official Mexican Norma for the Integral treatment of Obesity, approved in 1998 and published in the official daily, dated april 12, 2000.
